A new container train route from China to Afghanistan has been launched, passing through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, ensuring faster cargo deliveries and reduced logistics costs, according to Railway Supply.

The first train, carrying 55 containers of ZTE equipment, departed from Chongqing on February 10. The journey follows a route through Khorgos in Kazakhstan, continuing through Uzbekistan before reaching its final destination in Hairatan, Afghanistan.
Under stable travel conditions, the journey is expected to take between 12 and 15 days, making rail transport a more reliable option for goods moving between China and Afghanistan. Compared to road transport, the railway route reduces delivery times by 3–5 days and lowers logistics costs by approximately 15–20%.
The new railway corridor is expected to enhance trade connectivity by ensuring stable supply chains and increasing cargo turnover. This is particularly significant as Afghanistan seeks to expand its trade relations and strengthen its economic links with regional partners.
Experts anticipate that the route will create economic opportunities for Afghan businesses, with shipment volumes expected to rise in the coming months. As container transportation between China and Afghanistan continues to grow, the newly established railway corridor is set to make cross-border trade more efficient and cost-effective.
In October 2024, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan signed an agreement to increase bilateral trade to $3bn. The agreement also includes Kazakhstan’s involvement in constructing two railway lines in Afghanistan: Turgundi – Herat – Kandahar – Spin Boldak and Mazar-i-Sharif – Harlachi.
