Of the grain exported, Uzbekistan remained the largest importer, receiving 1.8mn tons, a 40% rise from the same period in 2023/2024. Other key export destinations include Tajikistan (724,000 tons, up 50%), China (659,000 tons), and Afghanistan (217,000 tons, up 38%).
Notably, shipments to Iran surged dramatically, with a 29-fold increase to 576,000 tons, and exports to Azerbaijan saw an 88-fold rise, reaching 266,000 tons. By the end of 2024, Kazakhstan expects to have transported 10.6mn tons of grain, with 8.1mn tons destined for international markets.
In addition to grain, Kazakhstan's flour exports also saw a positive trend. By the close of 2024, 3.2mn tons of flour will have been transported, including 817,000 tons within the country and 2.4mn tons for export, reflecting a 3% growth. Central Asian countries, China, and Afghanistan remain the main buyers of Kazakhstani flour.
To further boost agricultural productivity, Kazakhstan’s government earlier announced to allocate KZT 200bn ($403mn) in 2025 for a preferential leasing program focused on agricultural machinery, with a goal to increase production of combines, tractors, and trailers.
The 2025 agricultural plan includes a target of 1.9mn tons of mineral fertilizers to be purchased by farmers, alongside efforts to reduce dependence on imports. Domestic fertilizer production is growing, highlighted by the launch of ammonium sulfate production at KazAzot.
The Ministry of Agriculture was also said to be pushing for the industrialization of the agro-industrial complex, aiming to increase the share of processed agricultural products to 70% by 2028.
Additionally, the government is modernizing seed production and advancing agricultural research, with the goal of using 75-80% domestic seeds by 2030.
