Uzbekistan produced 50bn cubic meters of natural gas and 81bn kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2024 to meet growing energy needs. However, with electricity consumption expected to increase 1.7 times by 2035, the government is prioritizing efficiency improvements alongside production expansion.

During a presentation on February 19, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed key proposals aimed at improving energy efficiency. An analysis reveals that Uzbekistan uses 2.5 times more energy than the global average to generate $1 of GDP.
Additionally, electricity network losses stand at 14%, while natural gas losses exceed 7%. To address these inefficiencies, scientists have been engaged in identifying energy-saving opportunities, uncovering potential savings of 4.6bn kilowatt-hours of electricity and 1bn cubic meters of gas across seven regions.
The measures discussed include:
- Modernizing water utilities by replacing outdated pumps, which could save 1bn kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
- Upgrading boiler rooms in social institutions and integrating renewable energy sources, potentially reducing gas consumption by 5mn cubic meters and electricity use by 15mn kilowatt-hours this year.
- Implementing energy-efficient measures across industries, with a goal of saving 1.6bn cubic meters of gas and 3.5bn kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2025.

To achieve these targets, the government will introduce new energy consumption standards for large industrial enterprises, aiming to reduce usage by 5-10%. A nationwide program will also support the installation of energy-efficient equipment in public facilities.
Additionally, multi-storey buildings will receive enhanced insulation, while affordable loans will be offered for solar panel installations in residential areas. Consumers will be educated on energy-saving practices, drawing from Japan’s experience.
President Mirziyoyev emphasized the need for energy conservation across all sectors and issued directives to minimize waste and prevent theft, reinforcing Uzbekistan’s commitment to a more sustainable and efficient energy future.
