Saida Mirziyoyeva: Education for Women is the Key to Preventing a Humanitarian Crisis
In September, during a roundtable in Qatar for the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, Saida Mirziyoyeva highlighted the professional education center in Termez, established in 2018. She emphasized that the center has trained nearly 700 Afghan citizens, including 200 women, playing a vital role in addressing Afghanistan's critical shortage of qualified medical personnel, particularly in the fields of maternal and child health.
Mirziyoyeva reaffirmed Uzbekistan’s dedication to continuing education programs for Afghan women and girls, with support from the Qatari government and the Education Above All Foundation. Mirziyoyeva also stressed the crucial role of education in empowering women, stating that there is no better protection for a woman than free access to education.
In 2024, Uzbekistan saw 251,400 women secure permanent jobs and 54,500 engage in public works. A total of 177,100 women received vocational training, and 147,300 completed entrepreneurship programs.
Financial support included subsidies of UZ 289bn ($22.4mn) for 55,100 women and preferential loans totaling UZS 3.472 trillion ($268.7mn) for 206,600 women to start or expand businesses.
In addition, Uzbekistan improved its position in the 2024 Gender Equality and Governance Index (GEGI), moving up from 103rd in 2022 to 52nd place. The index, which assesses gender equality in 158 countries, highlights both the achievements and challenges women face worldwide.
