In a recent statement, Saida Mirziyoyeva, assistant to the President of Uzbekistan, underscored the importance of comprehensive education for girls and their potential to excel in various fields.
The best gift for a girl child is a complete education given to her. Our girls must express themselves in science, in the field of their choice, to make a career, to achieve great achievements. No one can cut them off from the world and keep them inside four walls, I don’t see such a life for any of our sisters. These girls may be the future bright stars we are waiting for, Mirziyoyeva stated.
This statement comes at a time when the education sector in Uzbekistan is undergoing significant changes. As of the 2021-2022 academic year, there were 808,400 students at Uzbek public universities, of which women accounted for 45.6%. This shows a positive trend as compared to 2019 when only 38.3% of 65,400 bachelor’s degree graduates were women.
There is still a gender gap in higher education, with girls being much more excluded than boys. Only 37% of students enrolled in universities are girls. Despite these challenges, the government has been making efforts to enhance early childhood education coverage and develop skills, especially for girls.
Mirziyoyeva’s emphasis on the importance of education for girls aligns with these efforts and highlights the potential of educated girls to contribute significantly to the country’s development. Her statement serves as a reminder of the crucial role education plays in empowering girls and women, and the need for continued efforts to ensure equal access to education for all.
