Uzbekistan has surpassed neighboring Kazakhstan in international air traffic, according to the 2023 regional according to CentralAsia+ Aero citing the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Despite having a lower overall air traffic volume, Uzbekistan outperformed Kazakhstan in terms of international passenger departures.
In 2023, Uzbekistan recorded 3.9mn international departures, representing 0.3% of global international passenger traffic and 1.2% of international traffic in Asia. In comparison, Kazakhstan saw 3.1mn international departures, accounting for 0.2% of the global share and 0.9% in Asia.
IATA highlighted the growth in Uzbekistan’s international air connectivity, noting a 19% increase in the Asia-Pacific region and a remarkable 395% rise in global connectivity since 2014. The country maintained direct air links with 69 foreign airports in 30 countries last year, having launched 68 new international routes over the past five years.
The majority of Uzbekistan’s international passengers, nearly 2.5mn, traveled to Europe, comprising 63% of total departures. The Middle East saw 741,600 passengers (19%), while 582,100 passengers flew to other destinations in the Asia-Pacific region (15%).
Moscow emerged as the top international destination for Uzbek passengers, with over 1mn travelers. Istanbul followed closely with 392,500 passengers, and Jeddah ranked third with 242,600 passengers.
