From January to October 2024, Uzbekistan’s foreign trade turnover totaled $54.4 bn, reflecting an increase of $3.4bn or 6.7% compared to the same period in 2023. The rise was driven by growth in both exports and imports.
Export and Import Performance
Exports during the period amounted to $22.44bn, marking a 9.6% year-on-year increase, while imports reached $31.92bn, up by 4.7%. This trade activity resulted in a deficit of $9.48bn. Goods accounted for 74.6% of total exports, with other goods contributing 30.6%, industrial goods 15.2%, food products and live animals 7.6%, and chemical products 6.1%.
Uzbekistan exported 1.70mn tons of fruits and vegetables, an increase of 15.7% (230,500 tons) compared to the same period in 2023. These exports were valued at $1.235bn, up 29.8%, and represented 5.5% of total exports. Key markets included Russia (43.7%), Kazakhstan (13.3%), Pakistan (13.3%), and Afghanistan (8.2%).
Textile exports reached $2.433bn, constituting 10.8% of total exports but marking a 5.7% decline compared to the previous year. Yarn and finished textile products dominated this category.
Service exports totaled $5.703bn, representing 25.4% of total exports and a 29% year-on-year increase. Travel and tourism contributed 49%, transportation services 35.8%, and telecommunications, computer, and information services 8.5%.
Imports reached $31.925bn, with key categories including machinery and transport equipment (35.1%), industrial goods (15.6%), and chemicals and related products (12.2%).
Regional Trade Dynamics
Kazakhstan emerged as Uzbekistan's third-largest trading partner, after China and Russia. This is attributed to shared borders, the CIS free trade zone, and liberalized economic relations. Uzbekistan’s trade turnover with CIS countries grew by 2%, reaching 34.9% of total trade, or $18.95 billion.
Uzbekistan’s trade with non-CIS countries decreased by 2%, accounting for 65.1% of total turnover. Trade turnover with EAEU countries totaled $14.4bn, with exports of $4.84bn and imports of $9.56bn.
The largest shares of trade turnover were recorded in Tashkent (38.5%, or $20.91bn), while the smallest contribution came from the Surkhandarya region (0.6%, or $323.7mn).
Exporters and Key Partners
The number of exporters rose to 7,015, with exports (excluding non-monetary gold) amounting to $15.82bn, a 16.3% increase. Key export partners included Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Türkiye, Afghanistan, France, and Kyrgyzstan, which collectively accounted for 39.6% of total exports.
Import Highlights
Imports of goods increased by $535.7mn compared to 2023, reaching $28.991bn, while imports of services totaled $2.933bn, a 43.2% rise. The largest shares of imports came from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Türkiye, Turkmenistan, and Germany.
Within the structure of imports, Tashkent accounted for 51.5%, or $16.45bn, with the smallest share recorded in the Surkhandarya region at 0.4%, or $113mn.
