The Russian Foreign Ministry has expressed concern over recent clashes between the forces of the Islamic Emirate and Pakistan, which have heightened tensions between Kabul and Islamabad.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, called for restraint and constructive dialogue.
“Moscow is concerned over the escalation of tensions on the Pakistani-Afghan border where not only the military but also civilians perish in shootouts,”
Zakharova stated, as reported by Russia’s TASS news agency.
The tensions have raised concerns over regional stability. Moeen Gul Samkanai, a political analyst, noted:
“From the perspective of their security being at risk, if conflict erupts between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the region's stability is threatened. Russia has plans to work with both Afghanistan and Pakistan if the region remains stable.”
The clashes come amid reports of civilian casualties and ongoing border disputes, according to TOLO news.Local residents in Afghanistan's Paktia province have urged for a peaceful resolution. “
We demand that they engage in dialogue to ensure no more lives are lost,” said Mohammad Afghan, a resident. Wali, another resident, echoed similar sentiments, stating: “We want this issue resolved through dialogue because people are extremely tired.”
The Islamic Emirate’s Ministry of Defense launched attacks on positions across the Durand Line on December 26 in response to reported Pakistani airstrikes on the Bermal district in Afghanistan’s Paktika province. According to sources, the clashes resulted in the deaths of 19 Pakistani soldiers and five Afghan civilians.
