Tajikistan saw a substantial increase in its export activities in 1H24. The total export value reached $997 mn, marking a rise of $319 mn or 47% compared to the same period in 2023. This information was disclosed by Bahriddin Sirojiddinzoda, the head of the Tajik Export Agency.
During this period, Tajikistan's foreign trade turnover amounted to $4.4bn. This figure represents a $990 mn or 29% increase compared to the previous year. The export of industrial products was a significant contributor to this growth, totalling $969 mn—an increase of $314 mn or 48.1% from 1H23. Additionally, agricultural exports rose to 77,200 tonnes, valued at $28 mn. This marks an increase of $4.7 mn or 19.4% over the previous year.
Among Tajikistan's exports, precious and semi-precious stones led with a value of $298.5 mn, showing a modest increase of $0.6 mn from the previous year. Cotton fibre followed, with exports valued at $95.6 mn, a significant increase of $75 mn. Primary aluminium exports reached $90.4 mn, up by $64.6 mn. Antimony exports were valued at $88.3 mn, reflecting a $55.1 mn increase from the previous year. Refined copper exports amounted to $19.9 mn, with no comparative data available from the previous year.
The primary markets for Tajikistan's exports in 1H24 included Switzerland, receiving goods worth $298.5 mn; China, with $186.8 mn; Kazakhstan, at $118.7 mn; Turkey, totalling $111.1 mn; and Uzbekistan, which received exports valued at $80.4 mn.
In terms of agricultural exports, Tajikistan sent 1,446 tonnes to Kazakhstan, Russia, and Belarus. This included 1,995 tonnes of onions, 275 tonnes of plums, 40 tonnes of beets, 18.5 tonnes of peaches, and 17.5 tonnes of bell peppers.
The Tajik Export Agency is discussing the establishment of an export zone near the Nizhny Panj border crossing to enhance trade relations with Afghanistan. This proposed zone aims to facilitate the export of Tajik products from Afghanistan to Pakistan. While official diplomatic relations with Afghanistan are not in place, trade continues robustly. Tajikistan’s primary exports to Afghanistan include fruits, stone fruits, pistachios, nuts, peppers, seeds, chicken eggs, and coal.
