By the end of 2024, Russia remains Tajikistan's primary trading partner, with bilateral trade between the two nations increasing by nearly 20% to reach $1.79bn, as it was informed by Tajik President Emomali Rahmon during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Igora resort in Russia's Leningrad region.
President Rahmon highlighted the strategic partnership between the two countries, expressing satisfaction with the progress in various areas of cooperation.
"Russia is Tajikistan's main strategic partner, and we are generally satisfied with the dynamics of development in all areas," he stated.
President Putin acknowledged the constructive nature of the bilateral relationship, noting that Russia ranks first among Tajikistan's trade and economic partners and second in terms of investment. Putin added that both countries have prepared a joint work plan to advance cooperation and implement projects beneficial to Tajikistan's growing economy.
Expansion in Education Cooperation
As part of the meeting, Putin announced an increase in the number of Russian educators working in Tajikistan from 72 to 82, in response to requests for more Russian teachers and textbooks. He also expressed readiness to expand the quota for Tajik students studying in Russian universities, emphasizing the importance of educational collaboration.
Putin highlighted the establishment of schools with Russian language instruction in Tajikistan as a promising area of cooperation. He noted that Tajikistan currently holds the largest quota for Tajik students in Russia, with 1,000 placements available annually, a number set to increase further.
Security and Regional Cooperation
The talks also addressed international security, stability, and information security, reflecting the trust-based and constructive relationship between the two countries. Both leaders discussed strengthening collaboration within international and regional organizations, including the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), where Tajikistan will assume the chairmanship in 2025.
Putin emphasized the importance of cooperation between the regions of Russia and Tajikistan, which remains a focus area in the bilateral agenda. He reiterated Russia’s commitment to fostering economic and humanitarian ties and implementing mutually beneficial projects.
