The State Customs Service of Turkmenistan reports that electronic registration of international cargo transport is being introduced in the country.
Specifically, the TIR-EPD electronic pre-declaration system has already been implemented at all of the country's border customs posts, including Altyn Asyr, Artyk, Sarakhs, Serkhetabat, Imamnazar, Farap, Dashoguz and Garabogaz.
Under this system, preliminary information on goods and vehicles is received electronically and simultaneously sent to the customs authorities of countries that are parties to the Customs Convention on International Freight Transport.
With access to the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan is seeking to maximise its transit potential in the region.
These corridors include the North-South International Transport Corridor, the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, the Lapis Lazuli Corridor (Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Caspian-Caucasus-Turkey-Europe) and the Ashgabat Agreement Transport Project (Kazakhstan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-India-Pakistan-Oman).
Turkmenistan has land borders with Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. On the Caspian Sea, it borders Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Russia.
