Hassan Kazemi Qomi, Iran's ambassador and special representative to Afghanistan, stressed the importance of Afghanistan's situation for its neighbouring countries, TOLO News reports. Speaking after the Regional Contact Group meeting, Qomi noted that developments in Afghanistan affected the entire region and announced the start of physical border fortification between Iran and Afghanistan.
Qomi mentioned ongoing security cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan, resulting in a stable security environment at their borders in recent months. He emphasized the need for realistic assessments of the current situation.
The Islamic Emirate has not officially commented on the meeting's discussions. Zakir Jalali, director of the third political department at Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry, said that the Islamic Emirate addresses its issues independently, based on its foreign policy priorities. Jalali affirmed Afghanistan's autonomy in decision-making.
Political analyst Seyed Hashim Jawad Balkhabi noted that Afghanistan's international and domestic matters are managed by its government, welcoming suggestions from other countries if made in good faith. Analyst Zakiullah Mohammadi called for a unified regional approach toward the Islamic Emirate, suggesting this stance be communicated to the United Nations (UN).
The Regional Contact Group met in Tehran on Saturday to discuss Afghanistan's situation. Special representatives from Iran, Russia, China, and Pakistan attended, along with an invitation to the Islamic Emirate. However, the interim Afghan government did not participate.
