Kyrgyzstan has received Russian S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems, marking a step in the country's defense capabilities, according to Izvestia, citing Marat Imankulov, secretary of the Kyrgyz Security Council.
“We have a unified air defense system. Now we have received elements of this unified system—the S-300. It is on the territory of Kyrgyzstan,” Imankulov stated.
However, the number of systems delivered has not been disclosed.
The S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems are expected to make a public appearance during the military parade in Bishkek on May 8, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. The delivery was part of a broader agreement reached during the visit of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov to Russia in 2021.
In November 2023, an agreement establishing a unified regional air defense system between Kyrgyzstan and Russia came into effect. Under this bilateral pact, Russia will oversee the coordination of troops within the collective security zone, while Kyrgyzstan will take the lead in executing defensive actions.
A 5-hectare area has been designated near the Russian Kant military base, situated 20 kilometers from Bishkek, for the deployment of troops and equipment.
The S-300 systems are designed to protect critical infrastructure such as industrial facilities, military bases, and command posts from aerial and space-based threats. They are capable of targeting both ballistic and aerodynamic objects, providing robust defense capabilities for Kyrgyzstan’s security.
