Russian President Vladimir Putin landed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday July 3 to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit aimed at discussing regional security and defense. The summit, scheduled for July 3-4 in Astana will bring together leaders from member states including China and Turkey.
Established in 2001 by China and Russia the SCO serves as a key forum for safeguarding security across Eurasia. This year's summit is expected to address pressing regional issues and foster cooperation among member nations. The SCO summit is expected to be dominated by Russia and China, with attendance from leaders or representatives of Azerbaijan, Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, UAE, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is also anticipated to attend.
Putin's agenda includes a series of bilateral meetings notably with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan as reported by Reuters.
Last year the SCO summit highlighted concerns over the unilateral expansion of global missile defense systems, a topic likely to resurface in discussions amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is expected to visit Moscow later this month, will not be attending the SCO summit. India will be represented by Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in his absence as reported by the Ministry of External Affairs of India, highlighting the strategic importance of the SCO in regional diplomacy and reaffirming India's commitment to engaging with SCO members on regional security and economic cooperation.
