Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have reached an agreement on the joint use of the Chashma spring, located along their shared border. The decision was made during a joint meeting held in Tashkent, attended by Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulla Aripov and Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Kamchibek Toshiev. The meeting was focused on the delimitation and demarcation of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz state border.

The two governments approved the protocol on the passage of the draft line of the state border through the last unregulated section. They also finalized the main terms of the draft agreement on the joint use of the Chashma spring, a vital water resource for both nations.
As part of the agreement, it was confirmed that the Chashma spring is a shared asset between the peoples of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Citizens of Uzbekistan will have free and unrestricted access to the spring, with the Uzbek side being allocated two-thirds of the spring's usage. Both sides agreed to coordinate any activities that might affect the volume or quality of the water resources to ensure their sustainable use.
The agreement stresses the spirit of cooperation, with both nations pledging to avoid any measures that could prevent citizens from fully utilizing the Chashma spring. In the coming weeks, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan will finalize and sign an official agreement detailing the joint use of the spring and the regulation of the state border.

In addition to the spring agreement, the two countries also discussed the operation and status of several border checkpoints. Negotiations are ongoing to streamline the movement of citizens and cargo across the border. The signing of the Protocol on Amendments and Addenda to the 2004 Agreement on Checkpoints is expected soon, which will create favorable conditions for both nations’ citizens.
A working group of representatives from both countries will soon meet to continue discussions and finalize the details of the agreements. A Protocol was signed at the end of the negotiations, marking a step in strengthening bilateral relations between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
