Uzbekistan and Egypt have taken a step toward enhancing bilateral cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of ecology. The agreement was finalized during a meeting between Aziz Abdukhakimov, Uzbekistan's Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change, and Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat.
The meeting occurred in Tashkent as part of the 7th session of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, and Scientific-Technical Cooperation.
During the talks, Uzbekistan presented its ongoing environmental initiatives led by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. These efforts focus on greening the country, addressing environmental challenges, combating dust and sandstorms, and restoring the Aral Sea region's ecosystem. Minister Abdukhakimov expressed particular interest in Egypt’s ambitious "100 Million Trees" project, which aims to combat desertification in the Sinai Desert and other regions.
The Uzbek side also highlighted the upcoming declaration of 2025 as the "Year of Environmental Protection and 'Green' Economy," reflecting the country’s commitment to sustainable development.
The meeting also explored the potential for cooperation in tourism, with discussions centered on a "Program of Cooperation in the Field of Tourism" between the governments of Uzbekistan and Egypt for 2025–2027. Both sides emphasized the importance of increasing tourist flows, developing creative and inclusive ecotourism, and promoting their national cultures and historical heritage.
The signed memorandum outlines plans for regular bilateral consultations to monitor its implementation and develop new joint initiatives. To ensure progress, the two sides agreed to establish a working group and designate key representatives from their respective ministries.
The Egyptian delegation also visited Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Ecology Situation Centre, where they observed the country's advanced environmental monitoring systems, including digital technologies for detecting and addressing environmental violations.
