The Green Development Forum of SCO Countries opened on July 8 in the coastal city of Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province, bringing together leaders and representatives to discuss and advance green development initiatives across the region. Leaders from Iran, Myanmar, Azerbaijan and representatives from Belarus, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Heads of government departments of SCO member states and dialogue partners such as Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Cambodia, Maldives, and the United Arab Emirates other guests attended the forum.
The forum was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China, the SCO Secretariat, the China SCO Good-Neighborly, Friendly and Cooperation Committee and the Shandong Provincial Government. This forum is the first large-scale event held by China after taking over the rotating chairmanship of the SCO.
Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the Green Development Forum of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Countries, highlighting the consensus among SCO nations to protect the environment and promote sustainable development as reported by the National Committee of the Chinese people's political consultative conference. In his letter, Xi highlighted China's commitment to the philosophy that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets," noting the country's achievements in fostering a development model that balances improved production, higher living standards and healthy ecosystems.
Xi emphasized China's dedication to strengthening communication and cooperation with SCO countries to advance sustainable economic and social development, ensuring harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. He lauded the SCO as a model for a new type of international relations and regional cooperation.
As China recently assumed the rotating presidency of the SCO, Xi expressed readiness to work with member states to uphold the Shanghai Spirit, enhance unity and coordination and promote green development. He called for writing a new chapter of common development and building an even closer SCO community with a shared future.
At the SCO Summit recently held in Astana, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized the urgency of addressing escalating environmental challenges within the SCO framework. He highlighted the need to prioritize climate cooperation by proposing an agreement aimed at combating climate change, focusing on concrete actions to promote sustainable "green" development goals.
Furthermore, President Mirziyoyev also suggested the establishment of the SCO Center for Innovative Climate Solutions in Tashkent. This center would be dedicated to researching environmental sustainability and advancing strategies for green growth.
