Uzbekistan is enhancing its global cooperation in ecology and environmental protection through a series of high-level diplomatic meetings aimed at addressing pressing environmental challenges. Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change, Aziz Abdukhakimov, recently met with ambassadors from various countries to foster partnerships and discuss joint initiatives.
During a meeting with Korea’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Won Do Yong, both sides celebrated the successful completion of a joint project with the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI) to improve solid waste management in Uzbekistan. Minister Abdukhakimov highlighted a new level of cooperation and discussed the potential of partnering with Sejin G&E Co. Ltd to generate alternative energy from landfill gas.
In talks with Morocco’s Ambassador Muhammad Adil Embarsh, Uzbekistan expressed interest in strengthening cooperation in tourism and simplifying visa procedures. The discussions also included plans to sign a memorandum of understanding focused on environmental protection as part of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP29).
Additionally, Uzbekistan and Georgia reached an agreement to collaborate on environmental legislation, impact assessments, and the development of ecotourism. Georgia was invited to share its expertise by providing lecturers and professors for training programs at the Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies in Samarkand.
At a farewell meeting with Egypt’s outgoing Ambassador, Amira Fahmy, Uzbekistan highlighted key environmental reforms under President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. These reforms include the afforestation of the Aral Sea’s former seabed, the national “Yashil Makon” (Green Space) project, and the creation of a climate center under the president’s office. Uzbekistan thanked Egypt for its cooperation in the environmental sector and emphasized the importance of continued knowledge sharing.
These meetings underscore Uzbekistan’s commitment to expanding international cooperation to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability. By working closely with global partners, the country aims to implement effective ecological projects, exchange best practices, and contribute to the region's sustainable development.
