Tajikistan's national electric power company, Barqi Tojik, and Afghanistan's Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat have formalized an agreement to purchase electricity for 2025. The signing ceremony was attended by Mahmadumar Asozoda, General Director of Barqi Tojik, and Abdul Bari Omar, head of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat.
The agreement, as confirmed by Barqi Tojik's press secretary, Kurbon Ahmadzoda, is expected to be extended annually until 2028. The electricity export will be limited to the summer period, from May to September, and will be contingent on the availability of electricity within Tajikistan's domestic market.
The exact volumes and cost of the electricity to be exported in 2025 have not been disclosed, but it was emphasized that the agreement will be suspended during winter months if domestic supply limitations arise.
In 2024, Tajikistan plans to supply approximately 1.9bn kWh of electricity to Afghanistan, an increase from 1.6bn kWh in 2023. This uptick in exports reflects Tajikistan's growing energy production capacity.
Tajikistan's electricity generation has seen a slight increase, with 17.2bn kWh produced in the first nine months of 2024, marking a 0.4% rise compared to the same period in 2023.
Approximately 95% of the country’s electricity is generated from its vast network of hydroelectric power plants, making it a key source of renewable energy in the region.
