Authorities in Dushanbe are reviewing a video appeal made by 24-year-old Afghan citizen Tamkin Mehrabiddin, who sought assistance and protection from Tajikistan's President, Emomali Rahmon. The video, shared widely on social media on November 19, outlines allegations of abuse and threats by her husband, prompting an investigation by the Dushanbe Police Directorate.
Background of the Case
According to the police, Tamkin resides in Tajikistan with her parents and has lived in the country for two decades. Over a year ago, she entered into a Sharia marriage with 48-year-old Hamid Abdulbasir, a native of Afghanistan’s Takhar province who temporarily resides in Tajikistan’s Roudaki district.
The marriage has reportedly been marred by ongoing disagreements, with Tamkin alleging psychological abuse and coercion by her husband. The police have collected evidence and are currently reviewing the case.
Details of the Allegations
In her video appeal, Tamkin described a pattern of abuse and manipulation by her husband. She claimed he exerts pressure not only on her but also on her parents, forcing them to make decisions that infringe on her rights.
Tamkin recounted specific incidents of threats and coercion, stating that her husband forced her to sign documents without explanation or her consent. She also accused him of sharing private audio recordings, which she said caused significant humiliation.
“This person has tried to do many harmful things to me,” Tamkin said. “He continues to threaten me and has distributed audio recordings that were not meant to be shared, leaving me humiliated.”
Tamkin alleged that her husband used manipulative tactics to convince her family, particularly her father, to agree to the marriage despite her objections. She emphasized that his actions have not only caused her emotional distress but also damaged her reputation among friends and acquaintances.
“He uses words so convincingly that they influence others, and he manipulates people in this way,” she noted in her statement.
Appeal for Protection
In her appeal to President Rahmon, Tamkin expressed hope that her rights would be safeguarded and that measures would be taken to protect her and her family from further harm. She underscored the need for intervention to ensure her safety and freedom of choice.
“I hope that my rights will be protected in Tajikistan and that I will receive the help I need,” Tamkin stated.
Police Action
The Dushanbe Police Directorate confirmed that they are reviewing the materials related to the case. While details about potential actions remain undisclosed, the investigation highlights the broader issues of domestic abuse and coercion faced by women in similar circumstances.
