The Export-Import Bank of China (Eximbank) officially opened a regional office in Tashkent on November 22, marking a step in strengthening economic ties between China and Central Asia. The event was reported by the Ministry of Investments, Industry, and Trade of Uzbekistan.
The newly established office will oversee Eximbank’s activities in eight countries across the region, including Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia. This move highlights the bank's commitment to expanding its presence and enhancing financial cooperation within the region.
Yang Dongning, Vice President of Eximbank, emphasized the bank’s substantial investment in Uzbekistan, noting that Eximbank has financed over 50 projects in the country, totaling more than $3bn. These projects span key sectors such as the chemical industry, energy, transport, agriculture, and water management.
During the opening ceremony, a meeting was held between Yang Dongning and Uzbekistan's Minister of Investments, Industry, and Trade, Laziz Kudratov. The discussions focused on the potential for new collaborative projects in hydropower, transport, telecommunications, and water management. The Chinese delegation reiterated its readiness to extend further financial support for Uzbekistan’s development initiatives.
Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Kuchkarov also engaged in talks with the Eximbank delegation. The parties explored opportunities for introducing modern technologies in agriculture, promoting "green" projects, and reconstructing irrigation systems to enhance Uzbekistan’s sustainable development efforts.
Eximbank’s decision to open a regional office in Tashkent was first announced in January 2024. In September, the Central Bank of Uzbekistan granted accreditation to the Eximbank representative office, paving the way for this strategic expansion.
Founded in 1994, China Eximbank is a leading financial institution with over $800bn in assets. The bank plays a crucial role in supporting China’s foreign trade and international economic cooperation, particularly in financing infrastructure and development projects in key regions worldwide.
China Exim Bank has 32 branches throughout China, as well as representative offices in Hong Kong, Paris, and major regions in Africa, South America, and Russia.
