The Khatlon region of Tajikistan has exported mineral fertilizers to Afghanistan for the first time, Avesta reported. This marks an important step in the country's economic relations and trade expansion.
According to the Khatlon newspaper, citing regional authorities, the foreign trade turnover of the Khatlon region reached $225.4mn in the first six months of this year. The export of goods amounted to $117.7mn, representing a 51.1% increase or $39.8mn more than the same period last year.
For the first time, 626 tons of mineral fertilizers produced at the Azot plant in Khatlon were exported to Afghanistan. This transaction was valued at $169,000, marking a new chapter in Tajikistan's export capabilities.
Imports of goods to the Khatlon region totaled $107.6mn. By early July 2024, 13,700 tons of agricultural products had been exported through the Khatlon customs checkpoint, including 9.5 tons of vegetables (8.7 tons of onions), 438 tons of melons, 2.7 tons of fruits and grapes, and 120 tons of other items. Additionally, 13,200 tons of onions were exported through Sughd region checkpoints, bringing the total agricultural exports from Khatlon to 27,100 tons.
In 2023, Tajikistan exported goods worth over $93mn to Afghanistan, while imports from Afghanistan were $4mn. This resulted in a total trade turnover of approximately $97mn. However, this figure reflects a decrease of nearly 12% compared to 2022, when the trade turnover between the two countries was $110mn.
Tajikistan exports a variety of goods to Afghanistan, with electricity being the primary export. Other key exports include industrial products, cement, coal, and mineral fertilizers. In contrast, Tajikistan's main imports from Afghanistan are fruits and vegetables, which are primarily supplied to its border regions.
