Tajikistan’s electricity exports have seen a decline of 3.2% in 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Presidential Statistics Agency.
In October 2024, the country exported electricity worth over $3.8mn. However, for the first ten months of the year, the total value of electricity exports reached $102.4mn, which is $3.4mn less than the same period in 2023.
Electricity exports accounted for 6.6% of Tajikistan’s total exports from January to October. The primary buyer of Tajik electricity during the autumn-winter period remains Afghanistan, while supplies to Uzbekistan are limited to the summer months, as reported by the national power utility, Barqi Toqik.
In August, President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan revealed plans for the country to achieve 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2032.
At present, Tajikistan generates 98% of its electricity through hydropower, making it one of the world’s top producers of renewable energy. President Rahmon emphasized that Tajikistan ranks sixth globally in terms of green energy production as a proportion of total energy output.
