UzAeroNavigation, Uzbekistan's air navigation service provider, has introduced a new digital system for transmitting essential airport information to flight crews, marking a step forward in modernizing the nation’s aviation infrastructure.
The Digital Automatic Terminal Information Service (D-ATIS) is now in test mode at Uzbekistan’s two largest airports in Tashkent and Samarkand, offering an upgraded alternative to the analog ATIS system.
Developed with assistance from the global technology provider SITA, the D-ATIS system delivers critical data such as weather conditions, runway status, and other advisories directly to pilots’ screens. Unlike the analog system, which relies on voice broadcasts, D-ATIS transmits text-based updates that pilots can review immediately and even print if needed. This advancement allows pilots to access real-time information quickly and reduces the time spent listening to voice transmissions.
One of the benefits of the D-ATIS system is its ability to relay information across extensive distances, unaffected by radio coverage limitations. Pilots can receive updates even before reaching radio range, improving situational awareness and enhancing flight preparation.
The digital service also eases the workload for air traffic controllers, as it enables flight crews to access critical airport updates independently. Operating on a dedicated frequency for each airport, D-ATIS allows pilots to be fully briefed on local conditions before contacting air traffic control, creating a more efficient communication flow in Uzbekistan’s airspace.
