Over the past year, 14 individuals have been charged with promoting polygamy in Uzbekistan, according to the Supreme Court's press service. This legal action follows amendments made to the country’s Criminal Code and the Code of Administrative Liability, enacted on October 31, 2023.
The recent legislation introduced Articles 47-8 and 189-2, which specifically address the promotion of polygamy and gender discrimination. Article 47-8 prohibits advocating cohabitation with two or more wives, while Article 189-2 targets the promotion of gender discrimination.
In the past year, all 14 individuals charged under Article 47-8 faced administrative penalties. Thirteen of these individuals received fines, while one was sentenced to administrative imprisonment. Under Article 189-2, seven individuals were also held accountable, all of whom were fined.
The penalties for promoting polygamy are significant, with fines ranging from 15 to 30 times the basic monthly income or administrative imprisonment for up to 15 days. Similarly, the promotion of gender discrimination can result in fines from 10 to 20 times the basic monthly income.
These measures reflect Uzbekistan's commitment to uphold gender equality and combat the advocacy of practices deemed harmful to societal norms. The government’s stance aims to promote respect for women's rights and prevent discriminatory ideologies from taking root in society.
