Uzbekistan has officially reopened the Shakhrisabz Airport, located in the southern part of the country, after more than 20 years of inactivity. This revival follows the extensive reconstruction of the passenger terminal and significant repairs to the airfield infrastructure, according to Uzbekistan Airports, the state airport operator.
On September 11, Silk Avia, a subsidiary of Uzbekistan Airways, operated the first flight from Tashkent to Shakhrisabz. The airline will now provide regular flights on this route twice a week using a LET L-410 aircraft, which has a capacity for 19 passengers.
Originally opened in 1983, Shakhrisabz Airport ceased operations in November 2003. Following its reopening, the airport now has the capability to handle up to 100 passengers per hour. The airfield features a runway measuring 1,554 meters in length and 35 meters in width, two parking stands for aircraft, and four helicopter pads. It is equipped to accommodate turboprop aircraft such as the ATR-42, ATR-72, and L-410, along with all types of helicopters.
The reopening of the airport is expected to improve regional connectivity and support the growing demand for air travel in the area.
