Gazprom has exited the Shakhpakhty gas field project in Karakalpakstan following the expiration of its production sharing agreement, as reported by Interfax. The agreement concluded on July 31, 2024. As a result, Gazprom Zarubezhneftegaz ceased its operations at the field.

Located in the southeastern part of the Ustyurt Plateau in the Kungirat district of Karakalpakstan, the Shakhpakhty gas field was discovered in 1962. Gazprom's involvement in the field marked the company's first project in Uzbekistan. The original Production Sharing Agreement, signed in 2004, had a term of 15 years, with a provision for a potential extension.
In 2018, the Uzbek government extended the gas production license for the Shakhpakhty field for an additional five years. This extension was formalized through a decree signed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and further confirmed by a bilateral agreement between Uzbekneftegaz and Gazprom during the International Economic Forum in Russia.
The field has produced approximately 350mn cubic meters of gas annually in recent years. In June 2023, Uzbekistan and Gazprom signed a two-year gas purchase contract, with daily supplies reaching 9mn cubic meters, amounting to an annual total of 2.8bn cubic meters. The supplies under this agreement began on October 7, 2023, marking a continuation of gas deliveries between the two entities.
