Gazprom has significantly increased its gas supplies to Central Asia doubling deliveries in the first eight months of 2024 according to Alexey Miller CEO of Gazprom. Speaking at the meeting dedicated to the Day of Oil and Gas Industry Workers with heads of subsidiaries and organizations on August 29, Miller highlighted the rapid economic and social development in the region, which is driving up demand for energy resources.
Miller noted that gas supplies to Uzbekistan have reached their maximum capacity.
“For instance, the gas supply for Uzbekistan is currently being met through the Central Asia - Center gas pipeline at the maximum technically feasible capacity. This is the same level at which we supplied gas to Uzbekistan last winter during the 'abnormally severe cold' period" Miller said.
Discussing Kyrgyzstan, Miller pointed out that the level of gasification in the country has doubled, praising the results of a decade of work by Gazprom Kyrgyzstan.
“A substantial effort has been made to reconstruct Kyrgyzstan's gas transportation system, with new gas transportation facilities now in place. Equally important, however, is that Gazprom Kyrgyzstan has undertaken socially significant projects in the country, consistent with Gazprom's usual practices" Miller noted.
Miller added that gas consumption in Kyrgyzstan continues to grow. As reported by Daryo earlier, Gazprom Export and Gazprom Kyrgyzstan have signed a long-term contract to double natural gas supplies from Russia to Kyrgyzstan from 2025 to 2040, as part of an agreement formalized at the 2024 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The plan includes transitioning the Bishkek Thermal Power Plant entirely to natural gas by 2026, expanding the gas infrastructure with 250-300 kilometers of new pipelines annually, and connecting 13,000-15,000 residential buildings to the gas network.
Additionally, Uzbekistan entered into a two-year gas purchase agreement with Gazprom in June 2023 as reported by Daryo. The agreement stipulates a daily supply volume of 9mn cubic meters, with an annual total of almost 2.8bn cubic meters. Deliveries under this agreement commenced on October 7, 2023.
