Uzbekistan's nuclear energy ambitions are moving forward as the execution phase for a compact nuclear power generation facility is now underway, according to Azim Akhmedkhadjaev, Director of Uzatom, the nation’s atomic energy agency.
Speaking to Trend, Akhmedkhadjaev confirmed that on September 10, 2024, a protocol was signed with Russia’s State Corporation for Atomic Energy ‘Rosatom’, initiating design and engineering assessments for the project. “Specifically, a shift camp and construction and installation base will be built, and engineering surveys will begin,” he stated.
Focus on Environmental and Seismic Safety
Uzatom emphasized its commitment to environmental and seismic safety measures. “Aerometeorological monitoring, observations of surface and groundwater characteristics, as well as monitoring of seismic activity and modern movements of the Earth’s surface, are being conducted,” Akhmedkhadjaev revealed. These measures align with the IAEA’s SEED (Site and External Events Design Review) recommendations following their mission to Uzbekistan in 2022.
Timeline for Reactor Launch
The first reactor unit’s energy launch is expected to occur five years after construction begins. Subsequent reactor units will follow at six-month intervals, ensuring a phased and controlled rollout of the nuclear facility.
Early Progress and Groundwork
The groundwork for the nuclear power plant began in the summer of 2024 with an inaugural meeting at the site. This initial stage included the establishment of a construction headquarters and preparatory tasks critical for maintaining the project’s timeline.
Akhmedkhadjaev concluded, “This project represents a milestone for Uzbekistan’s energy sector, promising to enhance energy security and contribute to the nation’s sustainable development goals.”
