A meeting between Uzbekistan's Atomic Energy Agency (Uzatom) and Wei Fuki, General Director of China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas (CNOS), took place during the government of Uzbekistan's participation in EXPO 2024 in Shanghai. The discussions centered on the implementation of joint projects in the nuclear energy sector and the potential for long-term cooperation.
The meeting highlighted the prospects for bilateral collaboration in peaceful nuclear energy use. Both parties expressed a strong commitment to exploring China's advanced experience in nuclear power plant construction and assessing the feasibility of integrating Chinese small modular reactors (SMRs) into Uzbekistan's energy landscape.
The two sides also discussed expanding uranium ore mining capacities, as well as the processing, production, and export of high-value finished products for use in nuclear power plants.
The Chinese representatives reaffirmed their interest in fostering strong bilateral relations across all areas of nuclear technology, acknowledging Uzbekistan's ongoing reforms aimed at advancing its nuclear program.
As Uzbekistan aims to diversify its energy portfolio, nuclear power has emerged as a key component of its strategy. Currecntly, 88% of the country's electricity comes from natural gas. However, as gas reserves diminish and electricity demand is projected to double by 2030, nuclear energy presents a viable and sustainable solution.
Uzbekistan is actively investigating the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which are recognized for their high safety, adaptability, and lower implementation costs. During the same conference as Mamadaminov, Azim Akhmedkhadjaev, head of UzAtom, announced that 14 potential sites for SMRs have been identified, with additional studies planned to assess the most appropriate locations.
