President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan highlighted a 16% increase in trade volume between Uzbekistan and other CIS countries since the beginning of the year during the latest meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The summit was held in Russia and chaired by President Vladimir Putin, bringing together leaders from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Armenia, along with CIS General Secretary Sergey Lebedev.
In his address, President Mirziyoyev praised the advancements made in multilateral cooperation under Russia's presidency within the CIS. The meeting focused on assessing the current state of multilateral relations and discussing future cooperation prospects.
An emphasis was placed on ensuring security and fostering stable development across CIS nations. The leaders stressed the necessity of enhancing collaboration among special services and relevant agencies to effectively tackle contemporary threats. The summit highlighted the adoption of coordinated measures and program documents to bolster cybersecurity.
In addition to trade discussions, the summit stressed the importance of revitalizing the sectoral councils and committees of the CIS. Looking ahead, President Mirziyoyev proposed hosting a meeting of the Economic Council and an Innovation Development Forum during the "Innoprom" international industrial exhibition in Tashkent in spring 2025, aligning with conclusions drawn from the recent Tashkent conference involving leading think tanks of the CIS.
The discussions also highlighted new priorities for long-term partnerships, including advancements in internet technologies, the "big data" industry, digital solutions, the creative economy, green energy, nuclear technology, and addressing climate challenges. To facilitate these goals, regular meetings among experts and analysts from CIS countries were suggested, with a future conference on artificial intelligence planned for Samarkand.
To expand cultural exchange, President Mirziyoyev proposed organizing cultural days for CIS countries and emphasized the need for an annual program of joint events in health, education, art, cinema, tourism, and sports. He expressed satisfaction with ongoing projects designating Samarkand and Tashkent as the cultural capital and youth capital of the Commonwealth, respectively, and highlighted the CIS Open Cup competitions for youth chess and football teams taking place in Uzbekistan.
Concluding the summit, President Mirziyoyev congratulated Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon on assuming the chairmanship of the organization in 2025. The summit ended with a series of agreements and decisions outlining the primary directions for cooperation within the CIS framework.
