Uzbekcoal, Uzbekistan's largest coal mining enterprise, produced 6.7mn tons of coal in 2024, according to Ministry of Mining and Geology.
The Angren Coal Deposit played a key role, producing over 5.5mn tons of coal. Meanwhile, the Apartak Coal Deposit exceeded 1.2mn tons for the first time. Uzbekcoal's Underground Coal Mine also contributed to the total production.
The company's coal production has shown steady growth over recent years. Uzbekcoal produced 3.8mn tons in 2019, 3.87mn in 2020, 4.78mn in 2021, 5.07mn in 2022, and 5.84mn in 2023. This reflects an average annual growth rate of approximately 15%.
Uzbekistan’s total coal production has also grown rapidly. In 2016, production volumes were below 4mn tons but increased to 6.55mn tons by 2023. In 2024, the government targeted a production volume of 8mn tons, including 900,000 tons by private entrepreneurs. Coal reserves in Uzbekistan are estimated to be around 2bn tons.
The Ministry of Mining and Geology plans to increase Uzbekistan's coal production to 10mn tons by 2025, with a long-term goal of reaching 20mn tons annually. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has directed efforts to expand investment projects in the coal sector to sustain and enhance growth.
Earlier Daryo reported that Uzbekistan planned to end state regulation of coal prices, shifting to a market-based pricing system. Previously, coal prices were reviewed annually by the Interdepartmental Commission on Tariffs. Under the new resolution, the Ministry of Energy will develop proposals for wholesale and retail pricing based on market dynamics, aiming for greater flexibility and efficiency in the coal sector.
