Uzbekistan has further cemented its commitment to enhancing intellectual property protection by signing the Design Law Treaty during a diplomatic conference organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from November 11-22, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Representatives from 193 countries, including Uzbekistan, participated in the event, where the draft treaty was formally signed. Uzbekistan's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Nodirjon Turgunov, represented the country in signing the document.
The agreement focuses on industrial designs, which encompass the external visible forms of products, including design, color, shape, and ornaments. These elements are crucial for enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of products.
By signing this agreement, Uzbekistan aims to simplify the procedures for registering industrial designs, align its standards with international norms, and improve the protection of these designs in both domestic and foreign markets.
The agreement also supports the harmonization of Uzbekistan's national legislation with global standards. This move follows Uzbekistan's earlier decision in June to join the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement, enabling industrial designs to be registered in 75 countries through a single document.
In the first ten months of 2024, Uzbekistan received 213 applications for industrial design registration, with 153 of those applications successfully registered, according to the Ministry of Justice. This progress highlights the growing importance of industrial designs in the country’s economy and its commitment to enhancing intellectual property protections.
