Uzbekistan is advancing its digital payment infrastructure with the potential integration of WeChat Pay, the digital payment system from Tencent Holding, into local payment systems.

A recent meeting at the Central Bank of Uzbekistan with a delegation from Tencent Cloud International, a subsidiary of the tech giant, focused on this initiative.
The discussions centered on the opportunities for bilateral cooperation in the development of digital technologies and cloud infrastructure. Key to the talks was the integration of WeChat Pay with Uzbekistan's payment systems, which would enable payments via QR codes, offering a seamless payment solution for businesses and consumers alike.
At the end of the meeting, both parties agreed to support initiatives in the payment systems sector and to coordinate their efforts on future joint activities.

Plans for Integration
Earlier, the Central Bank of Uzbekistan announced plans to integrate China’s leading digital payment platforms, WeChat Pay and Alipay, with Uzbekistan’s national payment systems, Uzcard and Humo.
This integration, aimed at simplifying transactions for foreign tourists, especially from China, is currently in the technical preparation phase.
The integration will be rolled out in two stages: the first will allow foreign tourists to use WeChat Pay and Alipay for payments in Uzbekistan, while the second stage will enable Uzbek citizens to make payments in China using Uzcard and Humo.
The Central Bank emphasizes interoperability with international systems rather than consolidation, which will enhance the ease of payments for visitors and open new possibilities for cross-border transactions in the future.
