The United States is set to announce a new military aid package to Ukraine on May 9, which could be worth $1.2bn, Associated Press and Reuters report.
This aid package will include Hawk air defense systems, anti-aircraft guns, howitzers, anti-drone ammunition, satellite imagery, and various training programs, all of which are aimed at bolstering Ukraine's security. The weapons will not be sourced from the US military stock but will be purchased from manufacturers.
This latest aid package will bring the total amount of US aid to Ukraine since February 2022 to nearly $37bn. In March, the US announced a $350mn military aid package to Ukraine.
NATO has also been supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia since the beginning of the large-scale invasion. The alliance has provided Ukraine with military aid worth over $70bn in the past year. Earlier, NATO countries pledged to provide Ukraine with everything it needs to emerge victorious in the conflict. In early April, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on member states to allocate €500mn per year for a comprehensive aid package to Ukraine.
