Uzbekistan begins cleanup after oil leak contaminates waterways in Surkhandarya

Uzbekistan has deployed special equipment to clean and neutralize oil-contaminated water bodies in the Surkhandarya Region, local environmental authorities announced on May 4.

The incident traces back to April 23, when oil-contaminated liquid leaked into a river in Boysun District from a well operated by Surkhan Gas Chemical Operating Company. A second leak occurred on May 2 after heavy rainfall and flooding damaged infrastructure at the site.

According to the regional Department of Ecology and Climate Change, the spill spread through natural waterways, reaching multiple districts. The contaminated flow moved from the Khongaronsoy area in Boysun through Bandikhon District and Kumkurgan District into the Surkhan river, and further via the Zang canal in Jarkurgan District toward Angor District.

Authorities said the situation is now under full control. In affected areas, including the Zang canal, special barriers have been installed to contain oil products, while mechanical methods are being used to remove the oil layer from the water surface.

In Boysun district, emergency measures were also taken to block flood paths and localize the source of the oil-mixed liquid, preventing further spread.

An investigation is underway to assess environmental damage, identify the causes of the incident, and determine legal responsibility. The activities of Surkhan Gas Chemical Operating Company are also being reviewed as part of the probe.
