Iran and Tajikistan took a significant step toward deeper bilateral integration as they signed 23 cooperation agreements during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s first state visit to Dushanbe on January 16, 2025. The agreements, witnessed by Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Pezeshkian, cover a wide array of sectors, marking a pivotal moment in the relationship between the two Persian-speaking nations.
Expanding Cooperation Across Multiple Sectors
The agreements focus on transport, technology, education, healthcare, trade, and culture, signaling an end to decades of strained ties and the beginning of a new era of collaboration. Key highlights include:
- Cargo Transit Development: A significant agreement to enhance Tajikistan’s access to global markets by developing cargo transit routes through Iran’s strategic Chabahar Port. This will integrate the landlocked Central Asian nation into Iran’s maritime trade network.
- Scientific Advancements: Cooperation in genetic engineering and biotechnology between Tajik universities and Iranian institutes.
- Digital Technologies: Joint projects in telecommunications and digital technologies to advance infrastructure and innovation.
- Healthcare and Cultural Ties: Agreements include partnerships between blood transfusion organizations, medical universities, and collaboration on traditional crafts and Islamic studies.
Additionally, accords addressing anti-corruption efforts, customs training, and partnerships between the countries’ chambers of commerce aim to enhance trade and transparency.
Deepening Historical and Cultural Bonds
Speaking at the Iran-Tajikistan Trade, Investment, and Tourism Forum, President Pezeshkian emphasized the nations’ shared cultural and historical ties. “We are not newly created nations trying to construct a historical background. We have a long history of neighborhood and coexistence,” he stated.
Highlighting the shared Persian language as a key advantage, Pezeshkian proposed leveraging the Joint Economic Commission to streamline trade and investment regulations, particularly in economic, technological, cultural, and tourism activities.
A Commitment to Regional Stability
The discussions between the two leaders also centered on regional security, including Afghanistan. Pezeshkian underscored Iran’s commitment to Afghanistan’s growth and stability, linking it to the security of Iran’s borders.
At a joint press conference, President Pezeshkian emphasized the critical role of regional stability, particularly in Afghanistan. “Afghanistan is an important neighboring country, and we consider its growth and stability in line with our own interests; maintaining the security of our borders is crucial,” he stated. He also confirmed that discussions with Rahmon covered Afghanistan’s evolving situation and broader issues impacting the region.
The joint statement reiterated the importance of combating terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, and cybercrime through coordinated efforts.
A Strategic Outlook
The visit and agreements reflect a strategic pivot for both nations, aligning Tajikistan’s aspirations for expanded trade with Iran’s position as a gateway to global markets. With new initiatives planned for 2025-2027 in industrial development and emerging technologies, the partnership is poised to deliver mutual economic and security benefits.
“Iran has no limitations on expanding relations in scientific, commercial, industrial, technological, and agricultural fields,” Pezeshkian declared, adding that removing trade barriers will be a priority.
