The Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) championship for youth teams under 20 years old is currently underway in Jalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan. The tournament features six teams competing in two groups, with the Turkmenistan national team facing difficulties in Group B.
After two rounds in the group stage, Turkmenistan has recorded two defeats. In their opening match, Turkmenistan narrowly lost to Uzbekistan with a score of 2:3. In their second match, Iran defeated Turkmenistan 3:0, Turkmenportal reported.
The CAFA U-20 championship includes six teams divided into two groups. Group B consists of Turkmenistan, Iran, and Uzbekistan, while Group A includes Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan.
According to the tournament regulations, the group winners will advance to the finals. The second-place teams will compete for the bronze medals. Additionally, there will be a match to determine the fifth and sixth places.
Despite the setbacks, the Turkmenistan Football Federation views the CAFA-2024 championship as a preparatory event for the qualifying round of the 2025 Asian Cup among youth teams. The qualifying tournament for Turkmenistan is scheduled to take place from September 25 to 29 in Bishkek, where they will compete in Group I against Japan, Kyrgyzstan, and Myanmar.
