In response to recent rumors circulating on social media and news websites about the unjustified shutdowns of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy has issued a firm denial. The ministry emphasized that no orders had been given to disconnect these stations from the power grid.
Reports falsely claimed that the Ministry had instructed the shutdown of charging stations without legal grounds. However, the Ministry clarified that there is no issue with electricity generation in the country, and current production meets domestic demand. Furthermore, the Ministry remains committed to the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs) in Uzbekistan as part of its environmental strategy.
The Ministry of Energy reiterated its support for EV adoption, highlighting the role these vehicles play in reducing environmental impact. Entrepreneurs operating EV charging stations were urged to report any legal obstacles to their business activities to the Ministry’s hotline.
This clarification came after a meeting on January 9, 2025, with industry stakeholders, where representatives from the government and private companies discussed the challenges facing the EV sector. The Energy Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to expanding EV infrastructure and resolving any issues that arise within the industry.
EV charging stations in Uzbekistan
In 2024 Uzbekistan saw a dramatic rise in the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, growing from just three in 2020 to 450 in 2024, thanks to the expanding EV market. While consumer interest in EVs has declined by 7.8% and primary market sales dropped by 35%, following a significant six-fold increase the previous year, the secondary market for used EVs is thriving, with a 30% sales boost in October. Globally, EV sales grew by 31% in 2023, slowing from a 60% increase in 2022. Fully electric vehicles (BEVs) made up a substantial share of the global market, with 9.5 million units sold.
