Over 17,500 passenger cars were imported into Uzbekistan in 2M24. It marks a substantial increase of approximately 12,500 units y/y, the State Statistics Agency reports. The total value of the imported vehicles stood at $383.1 mn, with an average valuation of $21,800 per car. The majority of imported cars originated from China (12,808), South Korea (4,176), and the United States (455).
In parallel with the surge in conventional car imports, Uzbekistan witnessed an uptick in EV imports during January and February 2024. The Statistical Agency disclosed that the country imported 3,500 electric cars during this period, indicating a 4-fold increase compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.
The monetary value of EV imports amounted to $85.7 mn, reflecting the growing importance of electric mobility in Uzbekistan's automotive landscape. Notably, China, the UAE, and Hong Kong emerged as the primary suppliers of electric vehicles to the country, underscoring the global reach of Uzbekistan's electric vehicle procurement efforts.
Looking ahead, Uzbekistan aims to bolster its domestic automotive industry by ramping up the production of electric and hybrid cars to a target of 500,000 units annually. Concurrently, the government seeks to elevate the proportion of domestically manufactured vehicles to 60%, thereby fostering self-sufficiency and promoting the growth of the domestic automotive sector.
