Uzbekistan experienced a rise in the import of electric vehicles (EVs) from China, with 3,337 units delivered in April 2024, a 90% increase from March, according to data from China Customs Statistics. The financial value of these imports also rose substantially, increasing by 71% from $36.2mn to over $62mn.
From the start of 2024, Uzbekistan imported more than 8,000 Chinese electric vehicles, valued at $164.5mn. This surge expanded the electric car segment to 10% of the overall car market in 1Q24, the Autostat analytical agency reported. During this period, total car sales in Uzbekistan reached nearly 90,000 units, showing a 26.8% increase.
In January 2024 alone, the country imported approximately 1,600 electric cars, predominantly from China. Of these, 1,577 cars were imported from China, with the remainder sourced from the United Arab Emirates and other countries.
Meanwhile, 114,605 passenger cars were manufactured in Uzbekistan in 4M24, a 1.5-fold increase compared to last year, according to the State Statistics Agency. Despite initial plans to halt Lacetti production in April, production saw a slight increase by March.
