In recent years, Uzbekistan has witnessed a significant rise in the importation of electric vehicles (EVs), signaling a shift towards sustainable transportation methods. Data from the Statistics Agency reveals a steady increase in the import numbers, with the country importing 7,139 units of EVs in 2023.
Rapid Growth in EV Imports
As per the Statistics Agency's report, the import of electric vehicles to Uzbekistan experienced a remarkable surge in 2021. A total of 809 electric vehicles, valued at $16.9mn, were imported from 11 different countries. Compared to the previous year, this marked a substantial increase of 679 units, representing a staggering growth of 6.2 times.
The momentum continued into 2022, with Uzbekistan importing 2,180 electric vehicles valued at $69.8mn. This figure represents a significant leap from the preceding year, with imports increasing by 1,371 units during this period.
In 2023, the trend persisted, with a total of 7,139 cars being imported from abroad, indicating sustained growth in the EV market within the country.
Regional Comparison
When compared to other Central Asian countries, Uzbekistan's importation of electric vehicles stands out. In Kazakhstan, for instance, the import figures for EVs were 570 in 2022 and rose to 7,680 in 2023, showcasing a similar upward trajectory. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan saw a steady increase from 34 EVs in 2020 to 1,410 in 2023, demonstrating a growing interest in sustainable mobility solutions.
Tajikistan, although entering the EV market later, imported 1,600 electric vehicles in 2023, reflecting a significant uptake in this environmentally conscious mode of transport. Turkmenistan, on the other hand, imported a modest 10 electric vehicles in 2023, indicating a nascent stage in embracing electric mobility.
The majority of electric vehicles entering Uzbekistan originate from several countries, including China, the UAE, Germany, Hong Kong, Lithuania, and South Korea. These nations serve as primary sources for EV imports, reflecting their prominence in the global automotive industry.
Domestic Production Initiatives
In addition to importing electric vehicles, Uzbekistan has taken strides towards domestic production of EVs. Notably, the country has embarked on initiatives to assemble hybrid and electric cars within its borders. In January, the President of Uzbekistan inaugurated the production of electric vehicles in the Jizzakh region.
During the launch ceremony, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev joined hands with Wang Chuanfu, the president of the company, to kickstart the assembly project. With an annual capacity of 50,000 units, this venture represents a significant step towards promoting sustainable mobility solutions and reducing the country's carbon footprint.
