The South Korean National Railway Corporation (KORAIL), alongside Saman and Dongmyeong Technology Corporation, will carry out a feasibility study for constructing a high-speed railway between Tashkent and Samarkand, according to Yonhap News.
The study, funded by South Korea’s Economic Cooperation Fund via the Eximbank, will take 15 months, concluding in March 2026. It will involve field research, transport demand forecasts, infrastructure planning, cost estimation, and economic efficiency analysis, as well as training for local specialists.
Uzbekistan Railways has announced plans for a dedicated high-speed rail line to address increasing passenger and freight traffic. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev had previously outlined the development of high-speed rail routes, including the Tashkent-Samarkand and Samarkand-Navoi-Bukhara lines, during the September 2024 Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank governors’ meeting. Turkish firm Rönesans Holding may also participate in the project.
