The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has outlined interim results of its initiative to boost adventure tourism in Kyrgyzstan. In a recent working meeting with national partners and representatives from the business sector, participants discussed strategies for fostering a sustainable tourism ecosystem that integrates regional growth with active involvement from local self-government bodies.
Key stakeholders, including Maksat Usubaliev, Director of the Department of Tourism; Nurbek Saparov, Executive Director of the Kyrgyz Association of Tour Operators; and Albina Alimova, President of the Central Asian Association for Sustainable Tourism, highlighted the potential of Kyrgyzstan’s natural beauty and cultural heritage as key assets for the country’s adventure tourism sector.
“Kyrgyzstan’s unique natural resources and rich cultural heritage make it an ideal destination for adventure tourism. Developing this sector contributes to the socio-economic growth of the regions, creates jobs, and increases household incomes,” said Maksat Usubaliev, Director of the Department of Tourism.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining eco-friendly and sustainable tourism practices, noting that UNDP has been a long-standing partner in advancing these goals.
UNDP’s involvement aligns with Kyrgyzstan’s national development priorities, particularly the National Development Program of the Kyrgyz Republic through 2026, as well as green economy initiatives for 2024–2028 and sustainable tourism development programs for 2025–2030. The UN agency’s efforts also contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by adapting global best practices to the local context.
Through its ongoing initiatives, UNDP plays a pivotal role in creating a sustainable and inclusive value chain for adventure tourism in Kyrgyzstan. By building capacity within local communities and promoting the use of the country’s diverse landscapes and cultural assets, UNDP is helping to shape innovative tourism products that align with global sustainability standards.
“The development of adventure tourism promotes economic growth, supports the achievement of the SDGs, and preserves ecosystems and cultural traditions. It provides local communities with opportunities to participate in sustainable development and derive economic benefits,” Monica Rijal, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Kyrgyzstan, shared.
At the meeting, participants discussed several key recommendations for improving Kyrgyzstan’s tourism sector:
- Strengthen coordination between government agencies and the private sector to foster collaboration.
- Develop and implement quality service standards across all stages of tourism development.
- Establish sustainable management systems for tourism routes at the local level, involving local self-governments and stakeholders.
- Support green tourism initiatives by providing tax incentives, simplifying licensing processes, and offering educational programs for small and medium-sized enterprises.
- Promote inclusivity by supporting women’s entrepreneurship and creating opportunities for people with disabilities.
UNDP remains committed to enhancing Kyrgyzstan's tourism infrastructure by promoting eco-friendly practices and providing support to local entrepreneurs. These efforts aim to diversify the economy while preserving the nation’s unique natural and cultural resources.
The “Aid for Trade” project, part of the UNDP’s ongoing support, will further strengthen the capacity of local businesses within the adventure tourism value chain. This initiative focuses on training, adopting quality standards, and implementing green tourism practices, which will contribute to job creation, regional economic development, and Kyrgyzstan’s standing as a premier adventure tourism destination.
The UNDP is currently in the fifth phase of its regional "Aid for Trade in Central Asia" project, which is funded by the Government of Finland. This initiative supports Kyrgyzstan, along with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, in fostering sustainable growth through the promotion of green value chains and boosting competitiveness in key sectors, including tourism. The project seeks to foster resilient and inclusive economies by promoting economic diversification, implementing gender-responsive strategies, and adapting to evolving market trends.
