More than 50 entrepreneurs in Kyrgyzstan are seizing a unique opportunity to enhance their e-commerce skills through the "Janyration Sanarip" program. This initiative, aimed at supporting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the country, is being implemented through a collaboration between the government of the Kyrgyz Republic and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
"E-commerce opens up unique opportunities for domestic entrepreneurs to enter international markets, expand their customer base, and improve the competitiveness of their products. The government of the Kyrgyz Republic is making every effort to create a favorable ecosystem where digital technologies contribute to business development and enhance the quality of life for citizens," emphasized Nazarbek Malayev, Deputy Minister of Economy and Commerce.
Since 2019, Kyrgyzstan has witnessed rapid growth in e-commerce, spurred by improved internet infrastructure and a rise in mobile payment users. However, the sector faces significant challenges, including consumer distrust in online shopping and limited internet access in rural areas, which house 60% of the population. To address these issues, the government launched the E-Commerce Development Programme for 2023-2026, focusing on enhancing the competitiveness of local products and attracting investments.
Within this framework, UNDP provides comprehensive support to entrepreneurs, equipping them with the necessary skills to navigate international marketplaces. This initiative is part of the "Aid for Trade in Central Asia" project, funded by the Government of Finland, which aims to foster business growth and expansion.
"Digitalization is key to bridging the digital divide and accelerating Kyrgyzstan's economic development. E-commerce improves access to services and creates new opportunities for local entrepreneurs. We believe that the collaboration between the government and UNDP will promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth, especially in rural areas with limited internet access," stated Alexandra Solovieva, UNDP Resident Representative in Kyrgyzstan.
A total of 542 applications were submitted for the program, and participants were selected based on several criteria, including existing business operations in Kyrgyzstan, a personal investment of at least KGS 80,000 ($950), and a commitment to actively engage in the project. The selection process also considered the entrepreneurs' experience, qualifications, and the sustainability and scalability of their business ideas. Participants represent various sectors, such as garment manufacturing, tourism, honey production, light industry, services, and trade, underscoring the program's extensive impact on Kyrgyzstan's economy.
Nargiza Turbatova, one of the program participants, shared how the initiative has transformed her business approach.
"I was able to organize work with seamstresses and knitters from across the country without meeting them in person. All communication happens online, allowing me to balance family life while growing my business. The 'Janyration Sanarip' program provided essential knowledge on entering marketplaces and promoting through social media. I especially appreciate the mentoring support and practical skills that helped me create an online store and expand my product range," she said.
UNDP is currently implementing the fifth phase of the regional project "Aid for Trade in Central Asia," funded by the Government of Finland. This project aims to support Central Asian countries in achieving inclusive and sustainable growth by promoting "green" value chains and enhancing economic competitiveness. It contributes to the creation of resilient, secure, and gender-sensitive economic structures by diversifying economies and adapting to new market and consumer trends. The "Janyration Sanarip" e-commerce expansion initiative is executed as part of this project in collaboration with the John Galt business accelerator.
