The first meeting of newly established Public Consultative Councils on Interethnic Relations and Social Cohesion (PCCs) took place on October 11, marking a step towards enhancing peace infrastructure across the country. The councils, formed within district administrations and mayoral offices, aim to foster dialogue and trust among local communities and government bodies.
The meeting gathered representatives from various governmental bodies, local authorities, experts, and community members to discuss the role of PCCs in promoting social cohesion and addressing pressing social issues. The councils will serve as advisory platforms, focusing on building resilient communities and enhancing dialogue between citizens and authorities.
Iskender Eshimbekov, Head of the Interethnic Relations Department at the Ministry of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy, highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering a culture of dialogue and trust.
"The establishment of Public Consultative Councils is not just a step towards improving dialogue between citizens and government entities; it is a strategic measure for building a resilient society. We are confident that these councils will effectively address social issues and strengthen trust at the local level,” he stated.
The PCCs have been established in 23 multiethnic districts and cities, based on the Ministry of Culture's Order No. 484 from July 2024. UNDP is actively supporting the institutional development of these councils, offering expert guidance to ensure their success. The councils will focus on promoting social cohesion, tolerance, and conflict prevention through dialogue and community-driven solutions.
“UNDP is committed to supporting the efforts of the Government of Kyrgyzstan in developing a platform for building peace infrastructure and strengthening social cohesion, especially in regions requiring targeted support,” said Alexandra Solovieva, UNDP Resident Representative in Kyrgyzstan. She emphasized that the PCCs are a critical part of the government's strategy to create an inclusive society.
The meeting participants expressed confidence that the PCCs, with the backing of UNDP, would play a crucial role in creating a safe and stable environment. The councils are expected to drive initiatives aimed at promoting peace, consensus, and long-term social development in Kyrgyzstan's regions.
