The e-commerce sector in Kyrgyzstan is expected to expand, projecting growth from $360mn in 2024 to $595.7mn by 2028, with tax revenues anticipated to more than double by 2025. This promising outlook stresses the importance of the E-Commerce Expo 2024, hosted by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce of the Kyrgyz Republic. The event aimed to accelerate digital transformation across Central Asia and attracted over 600 participants, including business leaders, government officials, entrepreneurs, and representatives from international organizations.
The E-Commerce Expo 2024 acted as a hub for collaboration and exchanging knowledge on the latest digital tools and innovations. The forum's objectives included enhancing intra-regional business connections, fostering stakeholder dialogue, and promoting the growth of e-commerce, thereby increasing participants' understanding of the digital economy.
“E-commerce in Kyrgyzstan is rapidly evolving, and we are committed to creating the conditions necessary for it to become a vital component of our economy,” said Daniyar Amangeldiev, Minister of Economy and Commerce.
He emphasized the importance of recent laws and programs supporting e-commerce and the collaboration with the private sector and international partners to unlock new opportunities for entrepreneurs.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is key in driving digital progress in Kyrgyzstan through initiatives focused on strengthening digital infrastructure, developing skills, and supporting favorable policies. Programs such as the Digital Readiness Assessment and the Joint Digital Health Programme highlight UNDP’s dedication to providing individuals and businesses—particularly in rural regions—with essential tools for thriving in the digital age.
“Digital transformation is a key driver for e-commerce, which generates jobs, builds businesses, and supports sustainable economic growth. UNDP is committed to ensuring that Kyrgyzstan’s digital transformation leaves no one behind, focusing on youth, women, rural communities, and persons with disabilities,” stated Alexandra Solovieva, UNDP Resident Representative.
She highlighted UNDP’s alignment with the country’s Conception of Digital Transformation for 2024-2028, promoting a cohesive and prosperous society.
Aligned with this broader vision, UNDP is assisting in the establishment of an E-commerce Park in Kyrgyzstan, set to provide a favorable regulatory environment for e-commerce businesses. This initiative aims to attract investment and foster the growth of the local business ecosystem.
In addition, UNDP’s E-commerce incubation program seeks to train over 50 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in digital marketing and online sales by 2025, strengthening the private sector’s competitiveness in the global digital marketplace.
"Kyrgyzstan is uniquely positioned to attract investment, advance entrepreneurship, and establish itself as a competitive player in the global digital economy," remarked Aibek Kurenkeev, President of the E-Commerce Association of the Kyrgyz Republic. "It is essential that we leverage this potential effectively."
UNDP is also prioritizing the development of digital skills among young entrepreneurs. Programs like Sanarip Aiymdar have empowered over 180 young women, creating job opportunities for more than half of the participants. Furthermore, the Janyration Aimak initiative has backed 76 youth-led startups across major regions, resulting in 378 new jobs and boosting local economic growth.
The expo’s discussions and workshops tackled both the challenges and opportunities in the e-commerce sector, providing participants with essential insights to succeed in a shifting digital economy. This event spurred significant advancements in digital development, paving the way for inclusive growth and innovation across Central Asia.
With backing from UNDP and various stakeholders, the forum enabled knowledge sharing, promoted collaboration, and forged essential business connections among participants. By advancing digital economy tools, encouraging open dialogue, and driving e-commerce growth, the E-Commerce Expo 2024 represents a pivotal advance in shaping Central Asia's digital future, setting the stage for continued growth and innovation.
