The Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), held a two-day national workshop on September 24-25 aimed at revising the country’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). This workshop officially initiated efforts to align Kyrgyzstan’s biodiversity conservation strategies with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The event gathered key government representatives, experts, and stakeholders to discuss strategies for halting and reversing biodiversity loss in Kyrgyzstan. This workshop marked a pivotal step in the country's commitment to achieving global biodiversity targets set by the GBF, which outlines four long-term goals for 2050, along with 23 specific targets to be met by 2030. The framework envisions a future in which humanity coexists harmoniously with nature, necessitating immediate actions over the coming years.
The workshop also officially launched the NBSAP revision process in Kyrgyzstan, supported by UNDP. The revised plan aims to align with the GBF objectives and provide a robust foundation for future biodiversity conservation efforts in the country.
Mirslav Amankulov, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic, emphasized the importance of a unified national approach during the event.
“The government of the Kyrgyz Republic will make every effort to ensure that this process is as inclusive as possible and based on the active participation of all stakeholders,” he stated.
Alexandra Solovieva, UNDP Resident Representative in Kyrgyzstan, highlighted the workshop's importance in the global fight against biodiversity loss. She emphasized UNDP's support for Kyrgyzstan's efforts to promote the mountain agenda, focusing on restoring biodiversity, creating jobs, enhancing community resilience, and fostering sustainable development.
Christina Supples, a representative from the UNDP Global Support Team, praised Kyrgyzstan’s proactive approach, particularly with the upcoming COP 16.
“Countries around the world, like Kyrgyzstan, are working hard to align their national biodiversity targets with the Global Biodiversity Frameworks and update their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans,” she remarked.
The workshop served as a comprehensive platform for addressing Kyrgyzstan’s biodiversity challenges. Participants assessed the current state of biodiversity and explored future prospects in light of global biodiversity goals. Through collaborative sessions, they identified key challenges, set specific targets, and defined indicators to measure progress. Additionally, they reviewed national strategic documents and outlined a roadmap for the revised NBSAP to ensure it addresses both local needs and global commitments.
By fostering collaboration among government entities, civil society, the private sector, youth, academia, and other stakeholders, the event ensured that diverse perspectives were considered in shaping Kyrgyzstan’s biodiversity efforts.
UNDP Kyrgyzstan remains committed to supporting the government in its biodiversity conservation initiatives, contributing to both national development priorities and global environmental objectives.
