On September 19, Sadyr Japarov, the President of Kyrgyzstan, held a meeting with Achim Steiner, the Administrator of the UN Development Program, as part of the 78th UN summit on SDGs, his press reports.
During their discussion, the leaders exchanged views on the collaboration between Kyrgyzstan and the UN, focusing on supporting reforms within the country and translating its international initiatives into action. President Sadyr Japarov emphasized the significance of implementing programs that bolster Kyrgyzstan's sustainable development and ensure food security.
He also highlighted that 2023 marks the midway point for achieving the 2030 sustainable development agenda. Sadyr Japarov underscored the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals summit, an integral part of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. He noted that Kyrgyzstan is actively taking comprehensive measures at the national level to fulfill these goals.
President Sadyr Japarov proposed an expansion of cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, hydropower, renewable energy, tourism, education, transportation, and digitalization. He specifically mentioned a significant project involving three countries: the construction of the Kambarata HPP-1, a joint venture by Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, which is open to international investors.
Furthermore, Sadyr Japarov expressed Kyrgyzstan's reliance on UNDP support for environmental and green projects, along with assistance in achieving goals related to greenhouse gas emissions reduction. He drew attention to the challenges posed by global climate change, particularly the rapid melting of mountain glaciers.
In this context, Sadyr Japarov emphasized that: "The problems and challenges of mountainous countries should not be the problem of mountainous countries only; common efforts to solve mountain problems should be focused on the global community."
Achim Steiner, the UNDP Administrator, acknowledged Kyrgyzstan's growing standing in sustainable development rankings and suggested that other countries can learn from Kyrgyzstan's experiences. He expressed readiness to initiate collaboration in Kyrgyzstan's priority areas, previously identified within their cooperative framework.
Steiner also proposed an increased focus on cooperation in the areas of digitalization and the green economy between the UNDP and Kyrgyzstan.
