Kyrgyzstan has witnessed a substantial increase in its berry exports to neighboring Kazakhstan and Russia, reflecting the country's growing role in the regional agricultural market. According to the Ministry of Agriculture's press service, Kyrgyzstan has exported a total of 6,236.3 tons of berries since the beginning of 2024. This represents a remarkable 37% increase compared to the same period last year.
The rise in berry exports has been driven primarily by strawberries and raspberries. In the first eight months of 2024, Kyrgyzstan exported 4,616.6 tons of strawberries, marking a 20.5% increase from last year. Raspberry exports have also seen a notable surge, growing by 36.4% to reach 1,470 tons in the same period. Additionally, Kyrgyzstan exported 150 tons of blackcurrants, further diversifying its berry export offerings.
Beyond berries, Kyrgyzstan's overall plant product exports have shown positive growth trends in 2024. Between January and May, the country exported 236,572 tons of quarantine-controlled products, marking an increase of 28,280 tons compared to the previous year. This includes a variety of agricultural products that are subject to strict phytosanitary controls, ensuring they meet the quality standards required by international markets.
Earlier Daryo reported that a pack of dried apricots from Kyrgyzstan recently gaining attention in a U.S. supermarket has highlighted the potential of Kyrgyz agricultural exports particularly products from the Altyn Aimak company. In response, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Erkin Consult are collaborating to enhance the competitiveness of Kyrgyz producers of dried fruits, berries and nuts in Batken, Jalal-Abad and Issyk-Kul provinces. The initiative addresses challenges such as outdated equipment, lack of certifications and limited market knowledge by providing training, expert consultations and infrastructure improvements. The project, funded by Finland aims to create 100 new jobs, promote gender equality and help local producers access new international markets while improving product quality and sustainability.
